I use to have the questions come in the comments below, but that wasn’t very sustainable and took to long to respond.

I was just wondering Marcus if and when i could at all swim. We have a pool at our house and we are heading up to the dells near the end of summer which we will do a lot of swimming and i was wondering like you said i can shower with my pierced ear lobe but could i go swimming and what are the effects if i do. Myself being a 16 yr old kid my summer consists of swimming, girls, movies, girls, and swimming so you see i REALLY need to get in the water. If it is not ok please let me know and answer my question and i will invite the girls over for a nice romantic movie like The Hangover :) THANKS SO MUCH again Marcus awesome job i told all my friends. Peace out.

I would honestly try to wait at least 2 weeks before going swimming in a pool, preferably 4 weeks. If you do start swimming earlier than 4 weeks, pay attention to your body and keep in mind that the chlorine & bacteria is hindering the healing. So, if it seems like it’s having a hard time, cut back on the water sports. Also, make sure you clean the piercing really well after swimming with an anti-microbial soap. I’d also try to cut down the amount of time your head is dunked underwater (specifically for the ear lobe).

Ok, my friend and I had piercings done this past Sunday the 14th. I had my nose pierced, wondering how long to continue with the salt water compress and antibacterial soap routine? Also, and this is such an oversight on my part, how when it’s time do you take out a nose piercing to put in a different one? HAHA, I know that you are laughing at that one but this is the first non backed jewelry piercing that I have had and completely forgot to ask you! :) Also wanted to tell you that my kids, 13 and 9 think that their mom is cool now! Thanks so much!!

Do the salt water soaks for 4-6 months, ideally. Most people seem to stop after a couple months, but I’d keep it up until you don’t get any more crusties. I’m sure this is what you mean, but use Satin soap, which is an Anti-microbial soap, instead of Anti-bacterial. Anti-bacterial soap tends to over dry the area and slows down the healing process as well as many antiseptics.

As far as taking the jewelry out, I suggest you leave it in for 6 months. Removing the jewelry too early can reset the healing time and cause some unnecessary trauma.

Thanks, I will leave it in for the 6 months, but when that time comes, how do you take it out? Is the jewel the “back” or is there a “back” inside my nose? I never asked you the mechanics of the actual jewelry!! I am just curious not planning on taking it out before I am supposed to! :)

I thought that you did the soaks and soap routine for that long, and I have the Satin soap so never fear, the piercing will be well cared for!!

I also just wanted to thank you for the great job and also wanted to tell you that I enjoyed talking to you!

The jewelry is bent like a twisted L. To remove the jewelry gently pull and it will start to bend up. Then, once you’ve gotten past that first 90 degree bend it’s a straight pull out.

It’s easiest to remove the jewelry after a long shower. Pretty much anything that gets crusty boogies off the metal, they can make it harder to pull out. Once it’s been healed for a long and you don’t have a cold, it should be easier.

cool, thanks so much! I thought that was how it worked, but can’t see inside my nose!! I just wanted to say thanks for being a cool guy. I appreciate you answering my silly questions.

Hope to see you soon for a redo of my navel piercing. My present to myself after I loose some weight!

Have a good summer, I will for sure refer anyone who asks me where I had my nose done you were awesome!

i just got my conch pierced and i was wondering how long i should wait before i can change the jewelry in my piercing?

  9. karcus on July 5, 2009 at 12:34 pm

For changing jewelry, your best off waiting the entire healing period. Especially if the jewelry is externally threaded. Each time you pull out the jewelry, you’re sort of disturbing the tissue as it’s healing.

Short answer, it would be ideal to wait 3 months minimum unless there’s an extenuating circumstance where it needs to be changed early.

Hey, So I got the small tab thing on my ear pierced (something that starts with a T I never remember the word) about a month ago and I have to have knee surgery on Wednesday and am not allowed to have any metal on. I know its too early to change it but I have to put a plastic one in. One problem… No idea how to get it out. I’m not sure if the front twists off or it pulls off. I would assume it twists off but it doesn’t seem to be working. If you could give me a little help that would be great. Thanks

The name of that piercing is the Tragus, named after the tuft of the beard of a goat, according to Gray’s Anatomy. Having to remove it for surgery is kind of an extenuating circumstance, so we can do damage control. Chances are it was pierced with a piece of neometal jewelry. It’s held in with a pin instead of threading, so what you do is hold on to the back (I use my fingernails) and hold onto the gem and pull apart. It’ll take a certain amount of force, but be gentle and don’t loose the gem, they’re kinda tiny.

If you have trouble getting it out, or getting it back in, stop by the shop and we’ll help you out. The less time you leave it out the better. There are retainer options if you want to come in and take a look at those.

Ah thank you so much. I have a plastic one to put in and I will put the metal one back in as soon as i get home that day. Thanks your a life saver. P.S. everyone loves the stud instead of the hoop so thanks for the suggestion.
