Welcome to your new addiction! We have this here for anyone who may not have any clue what to do with a new piercing or has some general questions, or specific questions. So, if it seems like I’m talking down to you… deal with it, I’m covering my bases. If you have specific questions that aren’t addressed here contact us, we’ll be happy to help. We won’t cover everything, just like a doctor wont tell you everything he knows. Oh, we aren’t doctors so please don’t confuse us with giving medical advice or practicing medicine.
After your piercing you may have some swelling and redness around the area; some piercings will have more than others. Generally, tongue and lip piercings can become very swollen.
In a couple days following the piercing you will start to notice what we call “crusties.” It’s lymph fluid and plasma, it’s suppose to be there. Don’t freak out. It comes off with warm water and is usually there in the morning. Generally it won’t become very noticeable in the middle of the day if you’ve already cleaned it in the morning.
The best way to remove dreaded disgusting crusties is to do a sea salt soak. These should be done 2-3 times a day and no more than 6. If you’re doing more than six you should probably seek a therapist.
Take a 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt to an 8 oz glass of hot water, but not so hot it burns you. Ideally fully submerging your piercing into the solution is best, but a compress would be the runner up. Make sure you use white, non-printed paper towel. Do this for 10-15 min. Again, ideally you would do 10 min or more, but with hectic schedules this isn’t always possible. If you do 5-7 min, it’s better than nothing. This will help the piercing exude and soften crusties inside the piercing as well as draw out the lymph fluid and plasma. The heat also helps stimulate circulation and draw blood to the area (we need red blood cells to heal skin).
After you soak your piercing wash it gently with an antimicrobial soap. Either Nutribiotic soap, Satin, or Provon is ideal. Antibacterial soap such as dial may be too harsh and shouldn’t be used too often. Doing this once or twice a day will be sufficient to helping your piercing heal itself.
Do not use rubbing alcohol, peroxide, or ointments such as neosporin, or bacitracin. Although these are fine for first aid when mommy or daddy uses them, they aren’t meant for continued use on a regular basis and will hinder the healing of your piercing.
For oral piercings such as tongue, lip, monroe, phyltrum (medusa), smiley, labret, lowbret, or cheek, use mouthwash after every time you eat smoke or drink anything other than water. Approximately 4-5 times is ideal. Good oral hygiene is crucial. Cutting down on smoking is a great idea as well.
Overall health will affect the healing of a fresh piercing. Unhealthy people don’t heal well. Smoking, drinking, drug use, hygiene, nutrition, and stress all have an affect on your body healing itself. Remember, what we’re doing is tricking the body to heal in a way that it wouldn’t otherwise do. In order for your body to be happy with it, we must take care of it.
