Oral Piercing FAQ
Thanks for letting me pierce you. If you follow these guidelines this piercing will heal quickly and be very enjoyable.
Congratulations, you did it!
Q: What do I use to clean my oral piercing on the inside of my mouth?
A: the best cleanser to use is an alcohol free, antibacterial mouth rinse, I suggest Biotene.
Q: How do I clean the inside of my mouth?
A: Rinse your mouth for thirty to sixty seconds with said mouthwash after all meals during the entire healing period. You only need to do this a few times a day, over cleaning is just as bad as under cleaning.
Q: How do I clean the outside of my lip/cheek piercing?
A: Before you clean your lip/cheek piercing make sure you clean your hands with antibacterial soap and hot water. Never touch your piercing with dirty hands. After washing your hands, clean off the crust that has built up on the outside of your piercing. This is best done with warm water and a cotton swab. Do Not skip this step. Apply a pea sized amount of satin on the tips of your hand and lather it up. Gently wash the area around the piercing. It is not necessary to rotate the jewelry or slide it back & forth to get the soap inside. Rinse thoroughly. It’s best to clean the piercing in the shower. Pat the area with disposable paper towel.
Q: What can I expect after I get my tongue/ lip/ cheek pierced?
A: Your tongue/lip/cheek will swell for approximately three to five days. To reduce the swelling it is best to let ice set on the area, make sure the cubes are small enough to fit into your mouth comfortably, crushed ice is best. You may experience some periodic tenderness or discomfort for several days, this is not uncommon.
Q: What is “that yellow stuff” that is coming out of my tongue?
A: “That yellow stuff” is a secretion that contains lymph and dead cells. This is perfectly normal. This is not a problem, but rather indicates a healing piercing.
Q: Why is my tongue/lip/cheek piercing bruised/bleeding?
A: Any piercing can periodically bleed for a few days. Sometimes there is bleeding under the tissue surrounding the piercing, which causes discoloration, bruising. This is nothing to worry about.
Q: My friend/sister/brother/mom/dad/girlfriend//boyfriend/grandmother/grandfather/lover/etc got an oral piercing and their piercing healed quickly, how long will my piercing take to heal?
A: Each and every person on this planet is unique, some people heal faster than others. Please be patient. You are an individual unlike everyone else, so do not compare yourself to others! Generally piercings take six to eight weeks or longer to heal.
Q: Is there anything I can do to speed up the healing process?
A: Get a good amount of sleep and eat a nutritious diet. Avoid stress, this helps with your life as well as your piercing. The better you take care of your body, the better your body will take care of your piercing.
Q: How long do I have to keep my piercing in before taking it out?
A: If you like your piercing you do not need to take it out, ever. Some people assume that they can take out their jewelry and reinsert it with no problems. This is not the case. I have seen piercings that have been there for years close in minutes. Some experimentation is suggested.
Q: Do I have to leave this jewelry in the piercing, it seems large?
A: Once the swelling subsides, you may come in and purchase smaller jewelry. Smaller jewelry is less likely to irritate your mouth and there is less of a chance of biting the jewelry.
Q:Do I have to worry about the jewelry coming loose?
A: If you check your jewelry once a day it will be fine. To check the jewelry, wash your hands with antibacterial soap and hot water, and then make sure the balls on the jewelry are secure. Dry your hands first.
Q: What can I eat?
A: You may eat anything as long as it doesn’t hurt. Your body will tell you what is best to eat in terms of pain. When chewing food, take small, slow bites. Drink plenty of water. This is good for you even after your piercing is healed. Do Not eat anything that is temperature hot, spicy hot, overly salty or acidic for several days.
Q: What should I avoid doing with this piercing?
A: Avoid all oral contact during the initial healing period. That includes no wet kissing (French) or oral sex. This applies to monogamous couples too.
Q: May I smoke with this piercing?
A: Reducing tobacco intake is highly advisable while healing an oral piercing.
Q: May I drink with this piercing?
A: Avoid large amounts of caffeine and any alcoholic beverages for several days. Alcohol includes beer, wine, and all hard liquors. These can add to additional swelling and discomfort to your oral piercing.
Q: When can I play with my piercing?
A: During the healing period be gentle with your oral piercing. Normal talking and eating are enough trauma.
Q: What if I have any other questions about my piercing?
A: If you have any questions, please give us a ring. My information and hours are on the back of this sheet.
